How to teach grandma to use the computer. (trouble shooting a boomer)

I grew up living the rest of my childhood with my Grandma. I call her Mamang, it's a bisaya word since she's from Negros occidental originated in Western Visayas. Since the vast majority of people from the provincial area here in the Philippines are not accorded to technology, some may only know a little about the technological perception and ideals. Mamang had such a hard time in keeping up with technology that the most technological method that she had to do was basically turn on the TV and or the radio. Apart from anything else, her mind is blank when it comes to logging in her Facebook, turning on the WIFI router, and even sometimes accessing her phone. Nonetheless, this hasn't bothered me at all. I sort of liked it when she bugs me about who to message and how to send a simple SMS. It's actually pretty cute. So I decided to write a blog on how I became an actual trouble shooter for my Mamang. Here 5 ways to help your grandma with the computer and or any technological device. Also this is how I applied what I've learned from my trouble shooting course as a BSEMC student.

  1. "WHERE'S THE SWITCH?" In order to let them understand their device they have to first know how to turn it on. So, let them understand how to switch on their device. Depending on what device they're in simple elaborate how to plug and unplug certain devices. How and where the power button is located. 2. "WHAT'S A WINDOW?" I get this phrase every time from my Mamang. They have 0 clues on computer terms, when you say open the window they will literally open the window. When you say click the mouse they'd find it quite ridiculous, like 'who the hell wants to click a mouse?' So you have to speak their own language and make them understand all these terms. This is your foundation for them to understand the device that they are in. 3. Apps, Uploading, downloading, THE WORLD OF MEDIA To use the device, you have to ask them what apps they want and show them how to install or uninstall apps. With this, they are able to enlighten themselves through the use o their device containing their desires apps and software. Also tell them that they can upload certain pictures depending on their desired privacy settings. Also educate them about proper netiquettes so that there won't be any boomer bad languages. Introduce to the the wonderful land of media, where they can get news and music. 4. STAY CONNECTED Tell them how technology is now accessible to anyone anywhere. They can call their cousin Janice or even video call or skype up their grandchildren. Elaborate to them that everything is much faster now with just one click they can now contact anyone they want, but of course don't let them talk to strangers. 5. Make them an account, their identity to technology. With this, you can now easily find them and they can easily find you and ask you more questions! of course it's a bit tiring but hey! We love them and we just want them to be happen! To that's 5 ways! go and introduce your grandma
